First, a little about JD and the theater:
JD Walsh is the founder of Ultimate Improv in Westwood Village, CA and
has been teaching improv for 14 years in Southern California. JD, a
graduate of UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television has performed
in over 50 national commercials, TV shows such as CSI, 24,
and Studio 60, and movies ranging from Love Liza to
Bad Boys 2. In 1999, JD opened Ultimate Improv, a theater that
believes improv comedy does not need to be fast, loud, and soulless, but
instead takes patience, risk, and heart. He has been a visiting
instructor at the Globe Theater in San Diego and the LA Improv Festival.
He has also coached improv in Chicago, New Zealand, Boston, and New York.
You will be auditioning for two different shows: The Advanced Ensemble Team and The X-ecution.
The Advanced Ensemble Team
Made up of those who have improv experience as well as those who show potential in the audition, it will be coached by one of the veteran players at the theater.
There will be seven rehearsals, culminating in a show in front of paying customers. The rehearsal schedule is as follows:
The First 30 Seconds. How do the choices you make in the first few moments of a scene affect the rest of your story? This rehearsal will focus on individual confidence and the decisions made the moment one steps forward to improvise.
POV. This rehearsal will focus on starting a scene in the middle of the story. Who is this character? What is his or her agenda? When do you hold on to your point of view, and when do you change it?
Stop Being Clever. This rehearsal is for performers who have been doing it for a while but feel they've hit a plateau. Do you feel like all you have is funny references, voices, and catchphrases in your improv pocket? This rehearsal will focus on allowing the performer to trust that everything out of their mouth doesn't need to get a laugh.
Fun. People take improv so damn seriously. At the end of the day, improv is just adults getting on stage and pretending, nothing more. This rehearsal will focus on the joy of letting go of your inhibitions and just playing.
Improv Acting. Why not work on your acting while in an improv rehearsal or show? This rehearsal will focus on grounding the performer in real emotion so that he or she can carry the work done on stage into any audition.
Relax. How does a performer learn to relax and stop worrying about getting laughs? This rehearsal will focus on realism and trusting that if you concentrate on character and story, the laughs will come.
Showtime. This rehearsal focuses on the upcoming show -- getting comfortable and ready to perform in front of a paying audience. The rehearsal will consist of a run-through of the show and notes from the coach.
The price is $175 and can be paid with a postdated check if need be. Ultimate Improv is a nonprofit theater, and this fee goes toward the rent and maintanence of the space.
The X-ecution
The X-ecution is an American Idol-like show in which both the audience and a panel of judges vote a performer out every
week. We start with 20 performers and eliminate one per show until there is only one left. If you are selected for this show, you are committing to a 15-week run.
To the winner of The X-ecution goes:
A spot on the Ultimate Improv Mainstage Team.
A cash prize and meetings with executives from all over Hollywood.
There is no charge to perform in this show, or for the mini-rehearsal before each show.
---
The audition is fun, easy, and low-stress. It will give you an indication of what Ultimate Improv is about and what a typical rehearsal is like. There are no strings attached, and almost everyone who auditions, whether they are accepted or not, has a great time.
